Thu, 19 Jan ’12: Everything is so different in the future

Happy New Year to the 10 of you that read these updates! The Christmas Party was nice, lots of food and hanging out and whatnot. I’ll try to aggregate some picture and put them up on the EVENTS page in a bit. In other news our Spring Planning Meeting will be this upcoming Saturday the 21st in New West 219. We’ll be picking the shows for the rest of the semester, so try not to miss it.

Thu, 01 Dec ’11: “”

Oh hey I haven’t updated in forever, as usual! A buncha stuff happened this semester. We just finished our last meeting of the semester and everything wrapped up quite nicely. In case you haven’t heard there is going to be a Christmas Party in New West 219 on Sunday, December 11th starting at around 1:30p. It’s potluck style, so try to bring something if you can. I will have all of the T-Shirts with me, so you’ll be able to pick them up there as well. ALSO the Events page was updated with pictures and albums and whatnot, so go check it out and get a blast from the recent past.

Sun, 11 Sept ’11: The Start of a New Era Semester

The Planning Meeting was a success! If you’d like to check out the new schedule, click HERE or click the ‘Schedule’ tab up at the top. In other news, the first meeting of the semester will be this upcoming Tuesday the 13th in Hamilton 100. In other other news, new background picture, woo!

Mon, 29 Aug ’11: Wheels Are In Motion. Wheels Within Wheels…

The new member meeting was a success! Or I’d like to think it was…We had about 50 or so people come out and watching Trigun: Badlands with us, and it was great fun. To any of the newer members reading this, thanks for coming (Also, don’t forget about the COUp Table in Lenoir)! The next major get together will be the Fall 2011 Planning Meeting, and that will be September 10th. I’m not sure where yet, but I’ll update this post when I find out. After that, the first official meeting of the semester will be September 13th (woo!). Again, not entirely sure where that will be at the moment, but I’ll send out emails and update this post as soon as I find out.

Sat, 27 Aug ’11: New Website for a New Year

It’s finally happened! The website has been redone! Whoaaaaa. Everything has been shifted and re-done, courtesy Hanna Palmerton. If you see Hanna ever, you should totally tell her what you think of the new website (I think it’s awesome). Some links still may be broken, and the Events page hasn’t yet been filled out with pictures, but they will get filled in. Slowly but surely. If you notice any other issues, or just have general cristcisms/comments about the site, please feel free to email me (cblashka@email.unc.edu), and I’ll get right on it. In other news, FallFest went splendidly, getting the club around 99 sign-ups. The New Member meeting is today starting @ 2p in Union 3411, and good times will be had for all there. See everyone there!

Tue, 31 May ’11: Summer and Spicy are practically the same word

Finally, we’re getting around to holding Summer COUp. The first meeting of the summer we will unfortunately be squatting (hopefully) in Hamilton 100. Next week, we’re guaranteed the room. Tonight will be a kind of sampler meeting, where we’ll see what exactly we want to marathon in chunks over the summer. Summer chunks, tasty.

Wed, 27 Apr ’11: Member Updates!

Oh snap! It’s about time I put these things up. We had a great final meeting of the semester. Trigun, as always, was quite good and left as all hungering for donut-y goodness. Head on over to the updated members page for some new avatar goodness and an updated group picture. Gasp! Other than that, Animazement is a month from now and, as usual, there will be a decent chunk of COUp going to that. Summer COUp will be starting up at some point, we just have to figure out a fun filled schedule. FINALLY, I swear the website will be getting a redesign over the summer, because I know how important this site is to everyone. That being said, peace out!

Sun, 21 Jan ’11: Reminds me of Spring

Just a quick note that the new Spring schedule is up for your viewing pleasure. Meetings start this Tuesday (Jan 25th), though we can’t confirm the location until room reservations open on Monday, so check the mailing list then. Scratch that, meetings start next Tuesday, Feb 1st, and will be in Hamilton 100. See you then!

Tue, 7 Sep ’10: I love the smell of first meetings in the…evening?

Heads up! We will be having our first meeting of the semester next Tuesday September 14th, starting at 7pm in Hamilton 100. The powers that be have decreed that we can’t get a room in order to start meetings a week early, but we are good from here on out. Attempts to update regularly will be made on a semi-regular basis.

In other news, brace yourselves for the flood of emails likely related to food, and the consumption of it.

Wed, 18 Aug ’10: Welcoming new victims recruits

COUP will be out in force at FallFest, this Sunday August 22nd, at 9pm on South Road. They don’t assign tables until just beforehand, so just walk down the rows ’til you see a bunch of nerds playing anime. We’ll be handing out fliers and possibly other goodies, so come see what’s in store, and drag your friends along. We can always use new blood for the otaku revolution.

For any new folks checking us out, stay tuned to this website for news on the upcoming fall schedule, and better yet sign up for the mailing list using the link above.

Wed, 26 May ’10: Still Alive

Sorry for the radio silence around here lately. Right now folks are gearing up for Animazement at the end of the week, but meanwhile we’ve whipped up a new summer schedule for your perusal. Please to be enjoying! For the summer we’ll be meeting in Gardner 105, which you can find it on this old map of central campus. 7pm on Tuesdays as always, of course.

Mon, 01 Feb ’10: Binghaming? That sounds wrong…

A couple announcements! First off, since we didn’t have a lot of people stay after our long-running movie at the first meeting, we put off starting our regular series until this week. That means if you stay for the second half of tomorrow’s meeting, you’ll be getting in on the ground floor of Baccano, Darker than Black 2, and Toradora’s second season. No excuses! Some of the ice will probably melt by then.

Also, we have Bingham 103 reserved as our meeting room. Last I heard we’re still looking to see if we can switch back to Hamilton 100, but until I hear for sure, Bingham it is. For those unfamiliar with campus, Bingham can be found across Polk Place from last week’s meeting, near the libraries.

Mon, 25 Jan ’10: Gardenering

First meeting is tomorrow, Tuesday the 26th, at 7pm in Gardner 105. You can find Gardner in this polk place map. I’ll update the schedule page when we know our room(s) for the rest of the semester. Tomorrow we’ll be watching the SF classic Akira, as well as starting in on our regular series of Baccano and the second seasons of Toradora and Darker Than Black.

Sun, 17 Jan ’10: Shows that are showing…

Ok, scheduling was done and the new schedule is up. First meeting is currently slated for January 26, and I assume we’re gunning for our usual room of Hamilton 100, but stay tuned for updates.

Thurs, 14 Jan ’10: Happy New Year a While Ago

Hey, look, it’s a news section that hasn’t been updated. Let’s rectify that. A new semester is getting started, and hence we’re about to have a planning/voting meeting Saturday the 16th at 2pm in New West 219. Be there, or let other people vote on shows for you (or mail Cameron a ballot; they were sent out on the mailing list). More updates to come soon after the schedule is hammered out, and of course we’ll let you know as soon as we have a room secured for the Spring semester meetings. But you can be assured they’ll be Tuesdays at 7pm like always.

(Also I swear I’ll get around to making a new title banner this semester… honest….)

Mon, 23 Nov ’09: Last Minute Thanksgiving

So apparently a bunch of slackers are heading home early for Thanksgiving, so tomorrow’s schedule is being replaced by a random not-Coup smorgasbord, and the regular shows are being wedged in sidewise to fit in the remaining couple meetings. See the schedule page for details, and have a happy turkey day, ya layabouts.

Sat, 12 Sep ’09: Falling

Holy crap the new Fall Schedule is up! (Quickest turnaround evar.) Don’t forget meetings start this tuesday. Hamilton 100, 7pm, be there. I’ve also updated the officer’s page with our new co-president and secretary, and a few other things around the site. I’ll get a new banner up reflecting this year’s shows when I can find the time.

Lots of great shows on the docket for this semester. Eden of the East, the show of international intrigue with naked hijinks, came in first by a landslide, so we’ll be watching that all semester along with Canaan and Toradora. Also scoring high were Soul Eater, Kuroshitsuji, and Michiko to Hatchin. You can check out the rest on the schedule. All good stuff. (Well, ok, I’m pretty sure Needless isn’t technically “good”, but it’ll be…. something. Yeah.)

Thurs, 10 Sep ’09: Get Yer Vote On

We’re having a planning meeting this Saturday (9/12) at 2pm in Howell 104, which is located next ot the Arboretum. It’ll run for a while as we preview snippets of 40-odd shows and vote on ’em. Shortly after that I’ll get a new schedule up for fall season which will start with our first official meeting next Tuesday in Hamilton 100.

Sun, 23 Aug ’09: Party Join Us!

Come see COUP at Fall Fest tonight at 9pm. Reportedly we’ll be at a table between the Domino’s and Sugarland booths on South/Raleigh Rd. We’ll have a sign-up sheet for interested new folks; get yourself on it and we’ll keep you posted (which mainly means getting you on the mailing list). Pretty soon we’ll be having a planning meeting to get input on shows for Fall semester, so come out and get involved and all that rot. Once that’s done I’ll get the site all updated and tricked out with a new banner for the new season (and possibly a whole new design if it’s ready). Please to be looking forward to it.

Mon, 18 May ’09: Ashita wa Hurricane

Just a reminder that Summer Coup starts tomorrow, at 7pm. We’ll probably be in Hamilton 101 as usual, but our reservation isn’t finalized yet, so if we’re forced to go wandering we’ll try to leave a note.

Our new season kicks off with Basquatch, which is at the least extremely pretty looking, and features backetball-playing robots, plus continuing with a few more episodes of Tytania and Kurozuka which we sampled in the spring. For regulars we’re going to finish off Moyashimon (the show with the adorable microbes), and bust out sci-fi classic Bubblegum Crisis in glorious remastered HD. We’ll also probably pop in some more Library War later on in the summer when the aforementioned series start running outof episodes.

Wed, 13 May ’09: Summer in progress

I’ve been a bit slack on the updates around here, but we had a planning meeting for summer session and a schedule will go up soon. We don’t actually have a room yet, but we’ll see what we can do about that. Or we’ll just wander around and steal A/V equipment or something.

Edit: and it’s up.

Mon, 02 Feb ’09: Success

Quick update: the dedicated COUP line-sitter brigade has successfully procured Hamilton 100 as our room again for every meeting this semester. Starting tomorrow, every Tuesday at 7pm. Be there!

Mon, 26 Jan ’09: Democracy In Action

So! We got through some voting action without too much bloodshed, and we have a shiny new schedule to show for it! Check it out. Unfortunately, since the system Events Planning currently has for reserving large rooms is terrible, we won’t be starting meetings until February, and we won’t be able to tell you where they are until like one day before the first one. But watch this space, or the mailing list, or the schedule page, and we’ll let you know.

This semester we’ll be continuing Daughter of Twenty Faces and Macross Frontier which we left off in the middle over break, and starting some new show about a guy with a magic hand and… a nun? I don’t know much about it but there seems to be some demon smiting involved. Also on the docket are a bunch of cool movies, including the new one from Hayao Miyazaki, which is not to be missed. Then along with a few more espisodes of Zetsubou-sensei and Natsume Yuujinchou from last semester, we have a bunch of shiny new stuff to sample which looks good. And one ridiculously old thing too, because that’s how we roll. Onward!

Mon, 08 Sep ’08: And back again

Ok, thanks to intrepid members sitting in line for ridiculous amounts of time, we have once again acquired Hamilton 100 for our regular meeting space this semester. There’s going to be a couple weeks in a different room though – check the schedule page for details. For you new folks, Hamilton is just north of Davis Library, next to Manning. There’s a map link on the schedule page too.

Tue, 02 Sep ’08: Right here, right now

The first fall Coup meeting is tonight! Unfortunately, we can’t get a solid room reservation until next week at the earliest, but we need to get this party started. So the plan is to gather around 6:45pm tonight in the Pit, from where we will valiantly set forth to claim a room for the evening. We’ll proceed to show the regular first metting as on the schedule.

Sun, 24 Aug ’08: What we have here is…

Just a quick note to let you all know that I posted the descriptions for our Fall lineup. We’re still working on that whole having a room to actually meet in thing. Stay tuned.

Wed, 13 Aug ’08: Listen to my new song..!

Ok, sorry for the lack of updates around here, but it’s time for a new semester and that means a new schedule. We don’t have our room reserved yet, so we haven’t put dates on everything, the the shows are set as you can see on the schedule page. There was an unusually huge amount of great stuff out in Japan over the last year, so this should be a lot of fun.

For any new victimsrecruits reading this, here’s the lowdown: COUp meets at 7pm Tuesdays throughout the semester. As mentioned above, the location is being worked on; watch this space. During the first half of the meeting we put on a variety of rotating shows you can look up in the schedule, then a short break followed by our three regular series for the semester. This fall that means Macross Frontier (Transforming space planes! Idol singers! Shiny!), Genshiken season 2 (COUp: the Animated Series continues), and Daughter Of Twenty Faces (Action and Adventure with a master theif, his girl apprentice, and their awesome zeppelin). Good times.

And now that we have new shows, I’m really going to update that top banner. Gimma ’til the weekend or so. New banner is up, woo. Of course, the previous banners are still around.

Sat, 10 May ’08: Incoming Summer

Holy crap, it’s time for summer session already. I have no idea where we’re meeting, but we’re doing it at 7pm this coming Tuesday, May 13. We may not know where we’re showing it, but we do have a shiny new schedule for you. There’s a bunch of new stuff out in Japan this spring which could be quite good… so we’re not going to show it to you. Because we’re saving it for Fall, which should be awesome. Meanwhile, though, we’re catching up on a lot of shows people dug that we’ve seen bits of but never finished. We’ll be doing a bunch more of NHK, Denno Coil, and Kaiji, along with refresher courses of Zetsubou Sensei, Bartender, Hataraki Man, and Gallery Fake, before plunging into some crazy 80’s stuff and other random fun.

Also, we have new officers. Everyone pretend to listen to them occasionally!

UPDATE 5/13: We should be in Gardner 105 all summer. Unless someone else is using it tonight. But after that for sure.

Oh, and that top banner? Yeah, I know it’s horribly out of date. I’ll make a new one for next year once we figure out what we’re watching in the Fall. Honest.

Mon, 18 Feb ’08: A Fresher Feeling

So that room in Bingham… kind of musty smelling, not terribly comfortable? Yeah. So our tireless and awesome El Presidente Sarah has procured for us an awesomer room on our off-days when we’re not in Hamilton. The new room is Hanes Art 121, we are there TOMORROW and April 1st, and if you’ve never heard of it before you can find it on this old map. Also now noted on the schedule page in bright red for your remindering convenience. Hooray!

Fri, 26 Oct ’07: Leading the Lost on Hallow’s eve

I imagine most everyone has found COUP by now, but since we are in a building that was just built, Phil has whipped up this handy map which shows both where Chapman Hall is located, and also the nearest reliable parking at the belltower lot. There may sometimes be other ninja parking slightly closer, but watch out for the numerous 24-hr reserved spots; the marked lot is safest.

Meanwhile, don’t forget next Tuesday is Halloween meeting. Come in a costume! We don’t care if it’s lame! No, really…. we don’t.

Mon, 10 Sep ’07: How long has it been…

…since trying to reserve a weekly room with a large projector didn’t suck completely? I forget. Anyway, as you may have gathered, we’re still working on securing a room for official COUP meetings starting tomorrow. As usual, there will be info here and on the mailing list as soon as we know. We may be back in Hamilton 100, or we may have a different room that Events Planning hasn’t suddenly decided they want to charge actual moeny for the privilege of using with no warning. Oy frickin’ vey.

UPDATE: We’re meeting in Chapman 125 again. Chapman is the brand new building between Sitterson and Carroll.

Mon, 10 Sep ’07: That’s why they call me the King

A while back COUP Faceless Minion #52 made a video to famous filker Tom Smith’s song, “Return of the King, Uh-huh”, using footage from the Rankin-Bass and Ralph Bakshi movies. It’s pretty awesome. At Dragon*Con recently, he had a chance to show it to the man himself, which resulted in it getting pimped on Tom’s blog and posted to YouTube. Awesome.

Mon, 27 Aug ’07: Last Minute Shindigs

Although official meetings won’t start until Sept. 11 due to room-reservation shenanigans, we’ll be doing some venerable “not-COUP” meetings to get things started, which I’ll post here:

Fall Not-COUP #1: Tues. Aug 28, 7pm, in Gardner 105 errrr, actually happened in Carroll 111. We tried.

Update 8/29: Descriptions for this semester’s shows are up, courtesy of Phil.

Fall Not-COUP #2: Tues. Sep 04, 7pm, in Chapman 125. We think. Chapman is the new building between Carroll and Sitterson.

Mon, 20 Aug ’07: Festival of Fall

Welcome, new victims recruits! As some of you may have seen, COUP was out in full force at Fall Fest with the largest loligoth maid brigade yet seen in these parts. If you signed up for the mailing list, you should be hearing from us shortly. If you didn’t but want to, follow the mailing list link above to get up to speed.

So, new semester! Scheduling will happen this Tuesday, so I should have a new Fall schedule up by the end of the week. We will, of course, be meeting at 7pm on Tuesdays, as always. Unfortunately, since the people in charge of rooms are still following the same horrible plan as last year wherein clubs don’t get to sign up for permanent rooms until several weeks late, we don’t yet know where we’ll be meeting. As soon as we do it’ll be announced both here and on the mailing list. Party join us!

Update 8/23: The exciting new schedule is up. Descriptions forthcoming. Meeting location still forthcoming also.

Sun, 03 Jun ’07: One of These Days

Ok, well, the On Stage page is updated with a Jet! page now anyway. I haven’t got a final script yet, but I do have a few pics and pictures, including the totally sweet poster by Lici featuring the main cast. Also, bonus get! We have the audio track for the very educational film shown to prospective Jet program teachers.

Mon, 28 May ’07: The Morning After

Animazement ’07 happened, and I think we all survived somehow. COUP staged another rousingly successful musical entitled “JET! or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Kancho”, about teaching English in Japan. I’ve got some materials I’ll post soon; meanwhile you can check the COUP On Stage page for links to stuff from previous years’ productions. Er, excpet I see we haven’t got anything but the logo up from last year still. I’ll see what I can do about that. But there’s some EVA! stuff, at least. I also have some minor revisions for that script that someone just sent me, which I’ll post up whenever I find time to get around to all the aforementioned stuff. Stuff!

Wed, 23 May ’07: Lost Translation

As people who attended yesterday noticed, we had a few schedule changes. We ran out of subtitles for Skull Man, so Bakamatsu is in its place. (Maybe we’ll try again next semester.) Also, we dropped Sangokushi because, well… it wasn’t very good. Gintama will fill in for it. And we do seem to have Hamilton 100 for the summer, in case anyone reading this is still wondering.

Two days ’til Connnnnnnnnnnnn!

Thu, 10 May ’07: Summer Days with COUP

New schedule up! New notes up! New suckersofficers up!

We’re hoping to be back in Hamilton 100 but stay tuned for confirmation. Of course, Tuesdays at 7pm like always. Meanwhile, don’t forget Animazement is just a few scant weeks away. And yes, there will be a new COUP musical because apparently we are that insane.

Thu, 22 Mar ’07: I love Carroll in the Springtime

Speaking of Spring, it’s time for the annual sakura-viewing picnic. The Sunday! Around noon, on the lawn in front of Carroll with the two big cherry trees. Potluck, bring stuff. See the mailing list for details.

Fri, 12 Jan ’07: Signs of Spring Semester

Time for another year of COUP, it is. Scheduling is done and the new schedule will be up in a little while. Unfortunately, the new room reservation regime means we can’t get an official room until after the 24th (ugh), so official COUP will start up on Tuesday, Jan 30th. But fret not, young bored otaku, for we are tentatively planning otaku-no-bowling and perhaps some location-roaming not-COUP meetings to tide you over. I’ll post here if I get a chance, but since these things may be planned at the last minute it’s best to watch the listserv – follow the link in the intro paragraph above if you need to subscribe.

Update 1/17: Otaku-no-Bowling was awesome, and hey look, I got the new spring schedule posted.

Update 1/24: An admirable group effort has successfully obtained the venue of Hamilton 100 for our meetings this semester. Also, I’ve posted new show descriptions courtesy of DFS.

Tues, 12 Dec ’06: Once more with feeling

Special extra not-COUP meeting tonight at a special time of 7:30pm in Hamilton 100. We may show stuff that got bumped off the schedule due to room conflicts… or we may not. Who knows? Show up for the surprise. Also, there is talk of dinner at Tandoor (on east Franklin St a bit before Estes) beforehand. Try poking the mailing list if you’d like a ride.

Mon, 09 Oct ’06: …burn all the lawyers.

So, the Ghost in the Shell movie we have scheduled for tomorrow is, let’s just say, not yet available in a satisfactory form. Consequently, we’re swapping the schedule around: tomorrow will be Miyazaki’s _Spirited Away_, with GitS hopefully moved to the beginning of November.

Unrelatedly, people seem to be planning a State Fair outing soon. Ask around at the meeting or keep an eye on the mailing list if you’re interested in joining us. Fried everything!

Sat, 16 Sep ’06: The Melancholy Lagoon of COUP and Clover

Whoah, what’s this? I actually got around to creating a new title banner for the new school year. How ’bout that. I had to keep the Genshiken because, well, they’re us, but we’ve got some new faces too. And I threw Kumiko in to show that we occasionally watch (gasp) not-cartoons. And she rocks. Anyway, if you’re ever hankering to gaze at the previous banners, they’re here and here (and archived on the otherwise way-out-of-date Goodies page).

Don’t forget this week’s meeting is in Hanes! Check the maps below or on the schedule page.

Sun, 10 Sep ’06: The Wandering COUP

Well, we have a room. Actually, we have two. We’re located in, unfortunately, both Hanes 121 and Hamilton 100; it was the best we could do with the Events Planning weirdness this semster. Check the schedule (which has been pushed back a couple weeeks) to see where we are each week, and try this map to find Hanes (way up and the NW corner of campus) or this one to find Hamilton, behind Davis Library.

This week is Hamilton. Be there or miss awesome cartoons.

Update: Phil has kindly put together another map which hilights our various locations.

Wed, 23 Aug ’06: For the Revolution of Events Planning

So! After a relatively successful evening of Indian food and planning, we have a show schedule for Fall semester. We’ll get some descriptions up shortly so you know what it’s all about. More or less. Meanwhile, having been shafted even more than usual by Events Planning, we have no idea where our meetings will be yet. So check back here or join the mailing list before next Tuesday to find out.

And to any new victims recruits checking out the page, welcome! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the revolution. If you’d like to join us for dinners before the meetings or just keep up-to-date in general, you’ll want to join the mailing list.

Update 8/24: The new show descriptions are up.

Update 8/29: Curses. We still have no official meeting place. The official schedule will probably end up bumped back by two weeks; I’ll update it when we know for sure. Look for COUP bowling next Tuesday while we wait for a room to open up. Check the mailing list for other surreptitious machinations. The revolution will continue.

Wed, 10 May ’06: Summer Revolution

Whoa, uh, guess I didn’t update the page at all last semester. Huh. Well, let’s make up for lost time. First of all, we have the new summer schedule up for your handy reference. We’re mostly catching up or continuing on series we’ve seen some of before: Kamichu, Gallery Fake, Mushishi, Gokusen Live. Also, we’ll be flogging you with no less than four movies, including the ought-to-be-epic Live Action Cromartie High. You can find Phil’s handy show descriptions here.

Meanhhhwhile, we’ve also got updates for new vict^H^H^H^H officers. Allegience or death! I’ve added them to the Members page too… if other people would like to get on there, send me a mail with your info for desired email and home page, and I’ll get you on there. Also, the Events page was updated a little while ago with this year’s Animazement dates, but you all should have signed up for that already, right?

Thurs, 12 Jan ’06: Hokkaido milk is still the best.

Ok, we’ve got up a new schedule complete with notes courtesy of DFS. Something for everyone as we once again span the field from stuff that was produced a couple months ago to stuff that was produced a couple decades ago. Tune in for the presumably ass-kicking conclusion of Gankutsuo, more adventures with blue-haired space elves, and a new entry for the “slightly more laid back” slot featuring stressed-out college students. And then we fill it out with fashionistas, vampires, spirit bugs, gondoliers, babes with guns, oldschool punks, a little more on the Kaliedo Stage, some low-budget defenders of the Earth, more giant robots, more Kino, more Kamichu, more ninjas, more other stuff, and, finally, all-time classic Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in brand new DVD-vision. Whee.

We’ll be back in Bingham 103 for the start of the semester. We might move later – but watch here and the mailing list for updates as campus scheduling predictably screws us out of other plans.

…Random instantaneous page update because I happen to have this window open: Loyal Coup Minion Laura has posted picture’s from last summer’s Coup Beach Trip. Dorks in the sun! Check it out. I’ll link this up properly from the extras page later on.

Mon, 09 Jan ’06: You won’t see me comin’…

Hey, lookit that, it’s a new year. Regular COUP meetings will start up on Tuesday January 17th at the usual 7pm time. I’ll get back to you with the room confirmation. Meanwhile, the Big Nine and Assorted Hangers-On will be having a planning meeting to schedule this semester’s features tomorrow, Jan 10th. If you want to give input, either send mail to the mailing list with your suggestions/requests ASAP, or if you’re interested enough to endure hours of tortuous planning, you could even show up to the meeting. Look for details, as always, on the mailing list.

Wed, 07 Dec ’05: Whooah… Disco pah-tay da yo!

It’s that time of year again. Time for the Emperor’s Birthday. The annual Coup bash of holiday debauchery, or at least sitting around eating yummy food and maybe playing some games or something. It’s awesome! Show up. Bring food.

The party will be on Saturday, Dec 10 starting around 7pm going until late. It will take place in room 3501 of the New Student Union. The Corpse page has a helpful map to the building and parking.

And for any poor un-initiated soul who’s worried, no, it’s not actually a disco party (mostly), I’m just quoting Crayon Shin-Chan.

Tue, 26 Sep ’05: No power in the ‘verse…

Ok, some might say I should’ve put up a notice about last weekend’s Firefly marathon before it actually happened… sorry, I’ve been rollingbusy. Anyway, next weekend we should be getting together to see the Firefly movie, Serenity, which should kick ass. See Phil for details, TBA. Meanwhile, on the subject of actual cartoons, meetings are back to usual at 7:00 in Bingham 103 after our brief digression last week.

Tue, 13 Sep ’05: Location, location, location

We have an actual, stable room for the rest of the semester: Bingham 103. If you need help finding it, try this official map or this map handily annotated by Phil.

Also, dinner tonight at McAllister’s at 5:30. Also shown on Phil’s map.

Wed, 31 Aug ’05: COUP Are Go

Alrighty then. New schedule is up! New program notes are up! Officers and Members page are slgihtly updated. New sacrifices, er, members signed up at Fall Fest should be receiving emails – if you want to get on the mailing list permanently go here.

First meeting will be Tuesday, Sept 6 at 7pm in HANES ART 121. Later meetings may be in Bingham 103, but we’re not positive yet, so check here for updates. If you’re new on campus, check the top of the schedule page for links to campus maps to find these buildings.

Despite a rather lean season in Japan recently, we’ve still got some fun stuff to watch this semester. Gankutsuo looks to be totally awesome, as long as you can stop your eyeballs from wanting to melt out of your head from the funky use of textures. And in our shorter segments, weve got a little action, a little shounen-ai, a bit of live show, some complete head-trips, some cooking, some magical girls, some ninjas, some Lupin, some more wackiness, a few giant robots (with surfboards), an art theif, some requisite Ghibli, some more action, and maybe a few more robots. And then there’s Emma, because sometimes you need to relax a bit.

Sun, 28 Aug ’05: Gearing Up

For anybody who sees us at FallFest tonight and other newcomers: never fear, the web site will be updated for Fall Semester soon. We should have a schedule by the end of the week, and you can watch this space for meeting place updates, or better yet join the mailing list using the link above. Party, join us.

Fri, 03 June ’05: Everyone knows it’s Shinji o/~

Alrighty, preliminary Eva! The Musical materials have been posted. It’s not prettified yet, but you can find scripts, cast lists, music cues, and other junk, with more to be added later. For those of you waiting for a video, hang on a bit… we do intend to get a torrent up eventually once we get our hands on a good copy ourselves.

Wed, 01 June ’05: Promises, Promises

The web-lemur is on the ball. Only one day later, we have a complete Sumer schedule up, with descriptions. Now, more promises: Animazement, I am reliably informed, was totally rocked this year by the COUP production of EVA: The Musical. To commemorate this epic glory, we’re going to throw up a web page with everything you might want to know: script, art, music, links to reviews and pictures, the works. Look for it soon here.

Tues, 31 May ’05: Guten Tag

Sorry for the late summer update; your friendly neighborhood web-lemur has been well out of the coutry for a couple weeks. New schedule should be up before it’s irrelevant – check the mailing list archives if you’re desparate. As far as I know we’re meeting in Carroll 111 for most of the Summer. Tuesdays 7-10, of course.

Thurs, 24 Mar ’05: The Borken Links of Spring

Someone recently noticed that my link to subscribe to the listserv was broken yet again, becuase whoever maintains the UNC listserv system can’t make up their minds how to organize it. Anyway, if should be fixed for now, so try this link again to sign up. (If it breaks again, going to “listserv.unc.edu” and looking for a “search” link and searching for “coup” should get you there as well.) Then just use the handy “subscribe” button.

And you should sign up for the mailing list, right now, because we’ll soon be scheduling the annual COUP Sakura-viewing picnic, always a highlight of the Spring season.

Tues, 25 Jan ’05: The Long Road Home

So, here’s the room situation as far as I know: Tonight, we’re once again in Venable 207, same place as last week. Starting next week (Feb 1st), we hope to be back in Manning 209 again, which is the room we used last semester. Towards the end of Spring, though, we hope to jump all the way back to Carroll 111, our digs from last year, because it is the swankness.

Tues, 18 Jan ’05: The Way of the Ronin is Hard

We are having a meeting tonight, dangit, but last-minute room problems continue to plague us. Check the mailing list for the latest info. If something is decided very soon I’ll post it here. Venable looks likely, or possibly Bingham. Also, if you meet us for dinner we’ll all end up together somewhere. Dinner is, as always, at 5:30. It might be at McAllister’s. Or maybe at the Rathskellar. … Yes, we’re so organized.

UPDATE: Looks like Venable 207. Be there or be sad.

UPDATE 2: Phil made a map.

Thur, 13 Jan ’05: 2005 de Go!

Ok, here we go. New year, new schedule is up. Got some good stuff, including a full run of “COUP: The Animated Series”, which for some reason was called “Genshiken” in Japan. Speaking of Ja-pan, we also have some show that involves lots of bread. Annnnd… some more new stuff, some good movies, a little more old stuff (there’s Cromartie, Midori, and Azumanga all sprinkled in there for the fans), the requisite dose of giant robots, and finally we’ll finish off with the new movie from the creator of the indie classic “Voices of a Distant Star”…. if it actually gets released in time. Hey, it’s only a few years late.

On a technical note, we’re having room issues for the first two meetings, so watch this space or the mailing list for last-minute updates. Later on, we’ll be back in Manning 209 for a while, and then hopefully snag the swank Carroll 111 for the latter half of the semester.

Fri, 19 Aug ’04: SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!

It’s Marathon time! This Sunday, Nov 21, in Caroll 111, from 11am to 7pm, we will be watching episodes 18-26 of both PLANETES and PRINCESS TUTU, two utterly excellent series that we failed to finish off over last summer. Worry not if you haven’t seen the first 17 episodes, we’ll fill you in and they’ll still be great. You can find some brief descriptions of both shows by sneaking off to Phil’s old notes from the summer session.

Wed, 25 Aug ’04: Hip-hop Samurai is the New Fashion

Just a quick note to say that the new schedule for this Fall is up for your perusal. This semester we’ll be spending time with the afore-mentioned hip-hop samurai, a kid with a bat, more sorority snobs, a girl on a motorcycle, a girl on some guy’s hand, a surgeon, a theif, more schoolgirls, some demons, some witches, tennis players, yakuza, crazy jungle people, more schoolgirls, giant robots, animators, alien frogs, computers and thugs in space, an aspiring astronaut, more thugs, and a ping-pong genius or two. Good stuff. More helpful descriptions coming shortly.

Update: The aforementioned schedule notes are now online.

Sat, 21 Aug ’04: Fall Festivities

Greetings to anyone who saw our table at Fall Fest. Interested in Coup? Great! We always appreciate new victims, er, recruits for the revolution. Meetings are Tuesdays at 7pm – the exact location and list of what we’ll be watching this semester should be figured out and posted here within a week or so. Also, consider joining our mailing list, where all this stuff will be announced too.

Update: the first meeting will be August 31, and will probably be in Manning 209, though we are looking into possibly getting better digs for the rest of the semester. Schedule coming soon.

Sun, 04 July ’04: Six fireworks for you

Happy fourth of july, I finally got around to updating some things on the Goodies page that I’ve been meaning to get to. New photos from Iron Chef Morimoto’s visit to our fair city, and a new song by special request from several people at a meeting months ago. Yay!

Wed, 05 May ’04: The Summer Empire Strikes Back

Well, it’s summertime again, and you know what that means. New officers on the officer’s page, and a brand new exciting schedule on the schedule page. Check ’em out. We’re hoping to be back in Super Dimensional Auditorium Carroll 111 for the duration. I’ll put a note here if that changes…

Update: somewhat belatedly, I’ve posted descriptions of the shows we’re showing, courtesy of Phil.

Thurs, 18 Mar ’04: Light the Light

Stuff! Things! Events! I’m in too much of a rush to properly update the events page right now, so here’s what’s going down. COUP Sakura Picnic this Saturday (Mar 20th) at noon off the quad. Bring food, mail President Mo to find out what other people aren’t bringing. Next up, Animazement. It’s May 28-30. Get money ($36) to Enforcer Conni by April to get in on the group 10% discount. Hotel rooms should be worked out amongst yourselves (i.e. e-mail the list if you want to know who else wants to sleep 8 people to a room…).

Wed, 11 Feb ’04: Fly Away, Try again….!

Yesterday we finally watched the 49th and final episode of Macross 7, and I think everyone present agrees that it was truly, truly Glorious. Yes. But fear not, minions, for the goodness does not end here. Occupying the traditional Mac7 time-slot in future weeks we’ll have the Macross 7 Encore Episodes, the Macross 7 Movie, and all 4 episodes of the Macross 7 Dynamite OAV series. Listen to my song!!

Sat, 17 Jan ’04: A Fscking Strike!

Well, the semester is off to a lovely start. In addition to temporarily misplacing the web site (not the web-lemur’s fault, honest), we’ve been booted out of our lovely Super-Dimensional Auditorium Carroll 111 by a last-minute class. Silly classes. The administration seems to think they’re important, or something. Anyway we’re probably in Gardner 08 until further notice, but that could change so check this space or the mailing list (see link above).

Annnnyway… now that we’re back on track we have a lovely new schedule for this semester complete with descriptions. I also updated some other minor things around the website that were horribly, horribly out of date. And fixed up the members page so it’s harder for unscrupulous spam-bots to harvest our email addies. Yay. Meanwhile, we already watched Tamala 2010, which was really… er… right… yes… what was I saying?… … A fscking strike!

Fri, 16 Jan ’04: Please Stand By…

The website was temporarily off-line due to beauracratic red-tape, but it’s back now, as you can see. New content for Spring ’04 will be up shortly…

Wed, 05 Nov ’03: Robo Rampage!

First things first – Lupin III Episode 0: First Contact was officially Freakin’ Awesome.

Right then. Scheduled tentatively for Saturday, Nov 15th is the inaugural COUp Robo Rampage. At this event, we shall watch all seven episodes of Giant Robo, and the go stuff ourselves at The Cheesecake Factory in Raleigh. We may watch a couple AMVs as well. It’ll be just like a con, only without annoying teenagers (present freshman and other slightly young COUp’ers excepted). It will presumably be in Carroll 111 (barring further announcements). It will sart… uhh… sometime. I’ll get back to you.

Thur, 30 Oct ’03: Cloud age symphony

Well, we had a fun nearly-halloween costume contest last meeting. Congrats to the winners: White Mage, Hammer Brother, Flower Girl, Robin, and David Smith. Banzai, and all that. We also survived a surprise showing of the first live-action episode of Sailor Moon. Appropriately frightening for Halloween, I’d say. Stick around next week for some Lupin movie goodness!

(What’s that, you say? This update had no content? Feh, who asked you. … Oh, by the way, if anyone’s been having trouble reaching the listserv web interface since UNC changed it all around on us, I’ve updated the link in the permanent intro above to point to the right place.)

Wed, 17 Sep ’03: Avast, the sea of stars!

Not that this really has anything to do with anime, other than the fact that several kick-ass anime shows (and a few lame ones) contain pirates, but this Friday, September 19th, is the official International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Arrrr!

Also, Sepember 17th is now Ed Caldwell day. Just so you know.

Arrrrrr!

Thu, 28 Aug ’03: Cake for you!

Annnnnnnd, welcome to yet another school-year of COUP anime goodness. The new schedule is up and ready (with descriptions coming soon). Got some good stuff on tap as usual. And some weird stuff. Often both at once, which is even better.

For any of you new impressionable young froshlings who may have surfed to this page and wonder what’s going on, feel free to join the exciting mailing list. Or just show up at Carroll 111 at 7pm on Tuesdays. It’s all good.

Allegiance or monkeys! Robot fire!

Oh, by the way, I also updated the nice little chart of all our regular series. It’s starting to get realllllly scary how long I’ve been in this club. Also, officers page is updated.

And a quick Sept.1 update: descriptions for this semester’s shows are now up.

Sept.3: Also, the members page is updated. A little.

Wed, 26 Feb ’03: Charcoal Feather Federation

Despite a recalcitrant codec’s best efforts to stop us, we watched some Haibane Renmei and it looks pretty swank. Meanwhile, Mahou Yuugi is crack. Yes.

Next thing, THIS SATURDAY there’s a Witch Hunter Robin marathon at 10am in Venable 308. It’s on the schedule now, along with placeholders for some other marathons, the contents of which haven’t quite been decided yet.

Thr, 13 Feb ’03: Smell the Lithium now…

Righto, well, it appears we ended our run of Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex on a cliff-hanger. Sorry ’bout that. These things happen when we’re watching shows so new that nobody’s actually seen them when we decide on the schedule. ^_^ Maybe we’ll have a marathon or something.

Big thanks to everyone who showed up to our YUA survey/screening last month… AnimEigo was pleased and gave us tapes for the library.

Meanwhile, everyone should be finalizing their plans for Animazement. Sure, it’s 3 months away, but it’ll be here sooner than you think. If you’re staying with COUP folks, you should already have been in touch with Heather.

Wed, 15 Jan ’03: Roy Fokker Lives… Later!!

Well, Macross: DYRL was temporarily misplaced, but fear not, it will be transplanted into some Marathon TBA later in the semester. Meanwhile, the stuff we showed in its place was great! Overman King Gainer had the BEST OPENING SEQUENCE EV-ARRR~, and Wolf’s Rain had pretty boys who turned into wolves with pretty Yoko Kanno background music. What could be better? So anyway, everyone tune in next week, when we might actually have the shows listed on our schedule! A winner is us.

Meanwhile, everyone try to show up for the You’re Under Arrest showing and survey this weekend! There will be free prizes! Show up in Carroll 111 at 1pm on Sat the 18th.

Tues, 07 Jan ’03: Roy Fokker Lives!!

… and so does COUP. The shiny new Spring 2000 Schedule is UP. (First real meeting is next week.) Since we were screwed out of our beloved Carroll 111 (for this semester only) it looks like meetings will be in Venable 207. Watch the schedule page for any updates. We also have some brief descriptions of this semester’s shows, courtesy of Mr. Lee.

Just to reassure you that we’re not ignoring your suggestions (no, really, we’re not… honest…) know that the following are up for marathon consideration: Hellsing, Kenshin OVAs, Lain, Nadesico, The Big O, Angelic Layer, Witch Hunter Robin. That last one might get shown as a regular series next fall. Meanwhile, Sadamitsu is a near shoo-in for a regular series over the summer.

Other web page updates: Ancient news posts have now been moved here to de-clutter the main page. Yay. The constitution has been minorly updated to keep the university happy.

Tues, 05 Nov ’02: “Whatever lies beyond this morning”

Ok, haven’t posted anything here in a while, but I have made a few seekrit updates in the meantime without posting any news. The schedule had some updates to be more accurate, old stuff moved off the top of the Events page, and so on. Also the goodies page now houses the opening and ending themes from Tokimeki Tonight – that’s right, that include Super Love Lotion.

On the recent anime front, Sadamitsu was truly glorious (we’ll probably show more of it in some future semester or the summer). Abenobashi and Azumanga were both on crack and seemed to go over well. And Witch Hunter Robin is looking pretty stylish – we’ll be watching up to episode 3 of that this semester.

Sat, 21 Sep ’02: Stuff and Things

So, a few new things. One is a master schedule archive (just text format at the moment) of things we’ve watched over the past five years. Hopefully this will help answer some questions along the lines of “Why aren’t we watching Kenshin even though lots of people requested it?” Your officers love Kenshin, really (well, much of it anyway) but see, we already watched like 50 episodes of it. And it doesn’t make sense to use our precious time slots on things half the club has already seen. However, things we’ve already seen are still do make good fodder for Saturday Marathons, so feel free to suggest them for that. This semester’s marathons are already set (see the schedule), but next semester’s are still up for discussion.

Speaking of discussion, we have a new feedback mailing address, coup_feedback@unc.edu, so feel free to send complaints, compliments, or random babble there. Everthing relevent will be forwarded on to the officers. If you want your comment to be anonymous, just clearly say so at the top of the e-mail.

Finally, we have a new secretary. Everyone say “Konnichiwa” to Lizzy. Yay!

Sat, 7 Sep 02: “Listen to my song!”

Minor updates today, mostly to the Goodies page, which now has the background it was always intended to have. Dug up another fanart, fixed some typos in the text goodies, and posted an actual song. Yay! Also, updated the members page (send me your info!) and a few other things.

Sun, 1 Sep 02: “The best milk comes from Hokkaido cows”

The first COUP marathon of the year went pretty well, despite a torrential downpour outside. If you missed this one, don’t worry, there’s more coming (check the schedule). Meanwhile, I’ve finally opened the goodies page. Right now it just has some stuff from the mailing list, including a handy reference of old COUP in-jokes, and some really old photos. But more will be coming. In fact, more will come even faster if you donate it! COUP-related photos, anime fan-art, anything spiffy (but not too big; no, we can’t host videos, sorry) — just mail the web-lemur.

Wed, 28 Aug 02: “I’ll die in the uniform of the Revolution!”

Excellent first meeting. Still with us? Good, then you’re in for the long haul. I’ve added listings for special Saturday Marathons to the schedule page. In particular, check out this week’s marathon, which will catch you up on a lot of COUP history you might have missed…

Sun, 18 Aug 02: Greetings, victi… er, new members

Welcome, welcome! Looking for a cool club that sits around in the dark and watches nifty cartoons? You’ve come to the right place. If you’re looking to join the revolution, you’ll want to head to this page and click the “join coup” button to get on our mailing list. Then check the schedule link above to find out where, when, and what we’ll be watching in the coming semester. Most meetings will be Tuesday nights at 7pm in Carroll 111; the schedule page has exceptions and a map link for you new folks. Then, poke around the rest of the site to see who we are, what we’re about, and get a heads-up on some sub-groups within COUP (check the links page). Oh, and uh, check back again a little while later, since you never know when I’ll actually finish more sections of the site. ^_^;

Meanwhile, kick back, relax, and we’ll see you on Tuesday nights. We always enjoy new customers, and we don’t bite too hard. Remember, anime has something for every taste… just come on down and we’ll show ya a good time.

Other site news: New schedule up, of course. The events page is up now. Let me know of anything else that should go on it, including marathons as they’re scheduled. A lame version of the About page, with history copied off the old web site, is also up. And there was much rejoicing.

Thur, 08 Aug 02: Not dead yet…

Well, the page has been a bit dormant lately because my July was exceptionally busy. Just a few updates to the members page and such right now. But hopefully I’ll have more time soon. I’m hoping to get at least a good start on “About”, “Events”, and “Goodies” before the fall semester (cross your fingers). Someone suggested putting up other potentially otaku-useful things like local Japanese restaurants and such – I’m all for it. I won’t have time to write stuff like that before finishing the other pages, but if anyone wants to send stuff in, I’ll try to get it up in a reasonably timely fashion. ^_^;

Other news: Fall meetings start August 27th (new schedule up as soon as we have it). Anime Weekend Atlanta is September 27th. Yaoicon (for Glock-ish folks) is on October 18th. And G-Gundam is showing on Cartoon Network right now. 5pm weekdays for wacky giant robot goodness.

Mon, 24 Jun 02: A little of this and that…

A few new updates. First off, I added the links page – it’s incomplete, but has the links to the COUP sub-groups that we needed, as well as a few other things. I also added some new members, filled in some missing past officers, and fixed a few typos. Yay. Feel free to keep sending me member info.

By the way, a quick note on browsers: These pages are done with relatively simple HTML with style sheets, which are the current standard. They should look peachy in any standards-compliant browser from the past few years, including NS6, IE5+, almost any Opera or Mozilla, and probably even Lynx. Unfortunately Netscape 4 is a known basket case when it comes to style sheets, so some things may look broken or just ugly with it; sorry ’bout that, but NS4 is just kinda broken like that.

Mon, 17 Jun 02: Welcome to the Revolution…

Okay, finally getting this page off the ground. Only about half the pages are up yet, and a few are rough around the edges, but I have plans, oh yes, I have plans. It may not be quite as mind-numbingly pretty as the former webmonkey’s layout, but hopefully it’ll be fun and useful… Check out the schedule, mail me to get on the Members page, let me know if anything’s broken… Allegience or Death.

Archiver’s note: The above was archived from the Wayback Machine archive of unc.edu/coup in December 2023. Beware of dead links! Former co-president Eli Zachary chose to spend the final hours of his UNC ONYEN access doing a project he’d long procrastinated on. You’re welcome. There’s actually a lot more on the old site which hasn’t been archived yet, should anyone dare to take on the challenge…
